Two of the world’s leading developers have thrown out their latest releases over the past couple of weeks – one of which being Spinions Beach Party, the other Grim Muerto. Two decidedly different slots in terms of themes and special features, but both with more than enough appeal to justify a few spins!
Spinions Beach Party
First up, Quickspin (aptly) has put its name to Spinions Beach Party – a cute and quirky game that might look a little familiar to most. After all, it’s hard to sidestep the fact that these little orange Spinions look somewhat on the similar side to a certain other group of cute and quirky characters, with an equally similar name. It’s just that these guys look as if they’ve been out in the sunshine a little too long – also rather aptly!
As for the action itself, it’s the usual setup with five reels and a total of 25 paylines to play for, with compatibility extending to most mobile and desktop platforms alike. Spins start out at just 25p and go right up to £100. The long and short of it being that if you are a fan of Despicable Me, there’s a good chance you’ll be hooked from the get go.
The graphics are gorgeous, the animations are right up there and there’s plenty to keep things interesting. The symbols include a selection of exotic looking drinks, the usual playing card values and the odd appearance here and there by one of the stars of the show. It’s the Spinion wild that has just about the most potential during normal play, which upon landing two or more will grant you access to the Spinions Sticky Wild Respin feature. While the feature is playing out, the wilds you landed stay stuck in place. It’s also possible to continue with additional respins as wilds continue landing on the reels – play your cards right and you could be looking at seriously impressive prizes.
Outside this, there’s the Beach Club Free Spins feature which is undoubtedly the highlight of the game. You’ll need to land three bonus symbols on the first, third and fifth reels at the same time, which will reward you with 10 free spins. During the round, Spinion Wilds are sticky and stay in place for the entirety of the bonus round. The only slight downside being that it isn’t possible to trigger any additional free spins, but there’s still plenty of scope for pocketing plentiful prizes.
Don’t let the low-key appearance of Spinions Beach Party fool you – this is a surprisingly high variance slot with some big prizes to play for. The only negative being that it often means accepting relatively extensive dry spells, before anything happens. Still, it’s enjoyable to spend time with due to the way it’s been put together, so it is definitely worth checking out.
As for Grim Muerto, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this would be a slot with a rather more sinister and foreboding vibe. In reality however, it’s just as interesting and enjoyable as its counterpart above. If you’re at all familiar with the world-famous Día de Muertos celebrations, you’ll know that it’s not about the typical doom and gloom of a funeral. Instead, it’s something of a party where everyone’s invited and the people of Mexico remember and celebrate deceased friends and relatives.
In this instance, the stars of the show form a Mexican Mariachi band – one that has clearly parted ways with the world as we know it some time ago. They’re joined by the usual playing card values, two scatters and a wild. It’s the guitar wild that pays out the highest price during normal play, which upon landing five on a winning payline will net you a relatively modest 50X your bet.
But what’s really interesting about Grim Muerto is how one of the reels is highlighted by for every spin. If you are lucky enough to land a guitar wild symbol on the highlighted reel, it expands to take over other symbols below and above it.
The free spins bonus round can be entered by landing three book scatter symbols on the first, third and fifth reels at the same time. You immediately get 10 free spins to play with and can go on triggering more spins up to an unlimited maximum. Should you land one or more candles during the free spins bonus round, you’ll be rewarded with another three or six free games. In addition, one of the symbols is allocated as an additional wild throughout the feature, before you get started. The second and fifth reels are highlighted with every spin, meaning that if any of the wilds lands on these reels, it takes over the entire reel.
And if all this wasn’t enough, there’s also a second chance feature, which means that when you land two book scatter symbols rather than three, you get to play a pick-me round for the chance to win an instant cash prize, or can be taken over to the free spins feature.
There’s quite a lot going on with Grim Muerto, which as a medium variance game is likely to appeal to just about anyone. You don’t tend to have to wait too long for something interesting to happen, plus the prizes available are impressive to say the least. Regardless of your own usual playing style or preferred genres, this is one outstanding slot we definitely recommend checking out.
