Two more slots under the microscope today, as we single out the games that are causing the biggest waves in the run-up to Christmas. There’s no better time to indulge in whatever it is that you enjoy doing, so if it’s slots you’re into, we’re here to point you in the direction of a few crackers…pun very much intended! Today, it’s the turn of Dirty Dancing and Jewel in the Crown – two very differently-themed slots that both deliver the goods in entertainment stakes!
First up, the new Dirty Dancing slot comes courtesy of the gurus at Playtech and promises a new twist on the franchise. Or at least, a further dose of the games born of the movie over the past 20 years or so! The question being – what does the latest iteration of Dirty Dancing bring to the table that’s worth checking out?
Well, the slot itself has five reels and 40 paylines which are in action at all times. The minimum bet per spin starts out at 40p and goes right up to…brace yourself…£1,000! That’s a grand per spin, if you feel like seriously going for it for some reason! Chances are, we probably don’t need to tell you what the theme is based around or what to expect. Dirty Dancing is still one of the most iconic Patrick Swayze movies of all time and no doubt always will be!
As for how well the whole thing is recreated, they’ve certainly hit the nail on the head in terms of visuals. The graphics are right on-point, all the main characters and staples from the film make appearances as symbols and there’s a predictably addictive soundtrack. Patrick Swayze – aka Johnny – is the wild symbol for the game, not to mention worth a full 125X your bet if you manage to land five in a row on any payline.
One thing that Dirty Dancing is certainly not short of is special features. Each of them can be triggered at any time randomly during normal play, including the Mambo Free Games features where you’ll get a 2X multiplier on any wins and up to 5 free spins. You keep on spinning the bonus wheel until you land on Collect, which will also add another 2 free spins to your tally.
Along with this, the Dirty Dancing Bonus feature can also be triggered at any time with potentially big cash prizes to play for. You get the chance to pick from a number of boxes which reveal a variety of items and cash prizes. You need to collect three items to progress to the next round – of which there are six – ultimately making your way to the Time of My Life Jackpot game. Cheesy? Yes…but still loads of fun!
There are progressive jackpots up for grabs if you get this far, meaning you could win anything from not much at all to a huge payout! There’s a Baby Jackpot and a Johnny Jackpot to play for – Johnny’s being the bigger of the two.
Last but not least, the Whirling Wilds feature can activate at any time and will see up to six wilds appear on the reels at random positions. Suffice to say, plenty of big wins to be had if luck is on your side!
If you’re a huge fan of the movie, you’re bound to be swept off your feet by Dirty Dancing. If you’re not, chances are you’ll enjoy it for a few spins, but it might not have a great deal of staying power. Decent prizes to be won, but the action is a little on the low-key side to keep things exciting for long.
Jewel in the Crown
Next up, Barcrest recently unleashed Jewel in the Crown on the world, which is accessible by way of desktop and mobile devices alike. It’s a very sparkly and glittering take on the usual five-reel slot, with 10 (+3) paylines to play with. Spins start from a minimum of 10p and go as far as £500 for high-rollers. It promises plenty of bonuses and lasting action, but does it deliver?
Well, it lives up to its name in terms of visuals – more sparkle than you’ll know what to do with. That being said, the graphics are actually a little on the low-definition side of things, which is a bit disappointing. Jewels form the mainstay for the symbols, along with the usual playing card values from 10 to Ace. The scatter symbol takes the form of a Crown, which is worth 10 free spins if you land three of them on the second, third and fourth reels at the same time. In the Free Spins feature, the blue crown becomes wild and the red crown becomes Mega Stacked, which is nice.
You can increase your chances of taking home a prize by wagering at least £2 with every spin, which will activate all wins pay adjacent. Good if you’re out to put more cash on the line, but not great for casual gamers. As is the case with other games from Barcrest, there’s the Big Bet feature for higher-stakes play. This means putting £20, £30 or even £50 on the line, for the chance to take home a bunch of free spins and much bigger prizes. Again, great for high-rollers, but not for everyone.
Last up, the RTP percentage of Jewel in the Crown is variable, in accordance with your stake. Under £2 per spin it’s 94%, above £2 it’s 96% and during the Big Bet features it’s 98%. Something to take into account before choosing how much you want to put on the line.
On the whole, the prospect of up to 500X your wager is attractive, but most of the fun with Jewel in the Crown is reserved for big spenders. So if you’re looking for casual gaming with slightly less cash required, you might be better off elsewhere.
