Food for Thought? Big Chef, Juice ‘N’ Fruits

Right now, there are literally hundreds of food-based slots doing the rounds online from dozens of developers. Which isn’t exactly surprising, given the fact that food is one of the only universally appealing themes nobody can resist! In this instance, we thought we’d look at two rather different food-based slots – Big Chef and Juice ‘N’ Fruits. Both have pretty strong reputations and have proved popular enough, but do they serve up enough to have you coming back for a second helping? Or maybe even a third?

Big Chef Slot

First up, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Microgaming’s Big Chef slot as there was plenty of fanfare before it hit the market a while back. If not, what you’re looking at here is a five-reel slot with 25 paylines, with spins starting from just 15p and topping out at a low £7.50. The theme is one of a French restaurant and everything is presented in a light-hearted cartoon style. The servers and the chefs are the highest-paying symbols in the game, while the dishes they serve up like steaks and soups aren’t quite as valuable. The accordion soundtrack is also every bit as delightful as it is cliché…but we like it!

There is a new feature in Big Chef that hadn’t made it to a Microgaming slot before – the possibility of triggering an instant free spin at any time by hitting the Cloche scatter symbol on the fifth reel. When you land a wild symbol, it rises upwards one row with each spin as you hit consecutive wins. If it gets all the way to the top, it will lock the Rising Wilds in place for the following spin.

This feature can also happen during the Free Spins round, which is accessed upon landing a minimum of three scatter symbols in the form of menus. You’ll instantly be given 10 free spins and all wins are multiplied 2X. Any wilds that appear on the second or third reels will expand upwards and increase the likelihood of taking home a healthy prize. It’s a great bonus round in general, with the only downside being that it is not possible to re-trigger any additional free spins.

On the whole, Big Chef is a medium-variance slot that doesn’t pay out on a particularly regular basis, but nonetheless offers the chance to take home a jackpot of up to 10,000X your bet. The base game is pretty and entertaining, but there’s not a great deal to it in general. Still, if you’re out for something nice and simple with a couple of interesting features and a potentially lucrative Free Spins feature, Big Chef is definitely worth a spin or two.

Juice ‘N’ Fruits Slot

Speaking of simple, that’s probably the single best word to describe the overall impression left by Juice ‘N’ Fruits. Though we have to say that in this instance, we mean it in an entirely complimentary way. You know those times when you crave a truly classic slot experience, free from all the bells, whistles, noise and complications of the mainstream modern slot? Well, take it from us when we say that Juice ‘N’ Fruits is it!

It comes courtesy of the folks at Playson and features five reels with ten paylines and zero frills. If you’re the type that likes the classic fruit machines of days gone by, you’ll be in your element with this one. You can play from 10p per spin up to a maximum of £50, the visuals are old-school in every way and the whole experience is one of quite idyllic forgotten simplicity. Flashy it isn’t, enjoyable it most certainly is!

You’re basically presented with a slightly updated version of the classic one-arm bandit, with reels packed with fruity symbols, the number 7 and everything else you’d expect. As with classic slots, it’s mostly about the base game with Juice ‘N’ Fruits and there is just the one bonus feature to play for. If you strike it lucky with a winning payline you’ll be given the opportunity to guess the colour of a playing card to double your win. You can then try again by guessing the suit of the card to increase your win 4X. You can gamble like this a maximum of ten times, meaning potentially huge wins if you pay your cards right…pun very much intended!

The aforementioned number 7 symbol is the most valuable in the game and will see you walking away with a healthy win if you strike it lucky. If you manage to line up five of them on an active payline, you’ll be looking at a payout worth 5,000X your wager. After this, the grape symbol is worth up to 500X your bet for five in a row, while the rest of the fruit symbols can pay out to a tune of up to 200X your bet, by lining up five in a row.

And that’s where it comes to an end with Juice ‘N’ Fruits – a slot that delivers exactly what it promises and what’s expected of it. Some will argue that there’s not enough depth to it and insufficient features to warrant repeat visits. On the other side of the fence, those who appreciate simplicity and enjoy the classic fruit machine experience of decades gone by will find everything they could possibly wish for right here! It might not blow you away with features and bonus rounds, but for a dose of real nostalgia, it ticks all the right boxes in spades!
