These days, it’s pretty safe to say that if there’s a classic movie with a strong following, there’s going to be an online slot based on it sooner or later. Which is precisely why the arrival…albeit quite some time ago…of both Basic Instinct and Austin Powers came as absolutely no surprise whatsoever. Two very different movies and two very different slots accordingly.
But if you’re out for some real entertainment and the chance of a win or two, which of these movie-based slots should you make a beeline for?
Right off the bat, we’ll try and keep the obvious cliché references to a minimum while going through the basics of Austin Powers. Courtesy of the folks at Blueprint Gaming, what we’re looking at is a five-reel slot with 25 paylines and spins up for grabs from 25p up to a maximum of £500 each. Unsurprisingly, the theme is pretty much the same as the movie itself – the tale of Austin Powers (played by Mike Myers) as he attempts to thwart Dr. Evil (also played by Myers). It’s a decidedly 60s affair and this is a slot that’s bursting with colour and everything you’d expect from the ‘grooviest’ decade in recent history.
As for the action, there are three bonus features that can be randomly triggered at any time during normal play. First there’s the Sharks with Frickin’ Laser Beams feature, during which a bunch of said sharks appear and use their lasers to blast a selection of wilds onto the reels up to a maximum of five. After this comes the Dr. Evil Big Win feature, where the evil genius himself appears to give the reels a nudge in the right direction to ensure you get a winning payline. Last by not least, the Mojo Wilds feature adds a huge dose of mojo into the mix, resulting in a handful of extra wilds being added to the reels.
If you land a series of Vortex Bonus symbols, you’ll be whisked over to the Bonus Selector. Here, you’ll be randomly taken to one of the available missions and could start out with a multiplier as high as 10X, if you land four bonus symbols in a row during the prior spin. There are six bonus features, which look a little like this:
- The Cryo Lab – Our hero is being thawed out after being frozen and needs to be decontaminated. The longer it lasts, the more you’ll pocket.
- Fat Bastard Free Spins – Six free spins during which there’s also the chance of hitting the brilliantly named Colossal Wild Fat Bastard symbols.
- Mini Me Free Spins – The little guy actually gives you more free spins…10 in total…along with the chance of landing Mini Me Sticky Wilds.
- Fembot Free Spins – A total of five free spins are handed out, but are sweetened hugely by the ability to add up to five stacked wilds with each spin.
- Volcano Lair Bonus – Rifle through the spy bag and keep uncovering goodies until you find explosives, at which point it all comes to an end.
- Submarine Lair Trail – Slightly more complex, but the basic idea is to collect as many golden keys as possible along the way for bigger prizes.
What’s great about the Austin Powers slot is the way in which not only is the base game highly entertaining, but with so many bonus offers to play for you’re really never too far from something even more epic. It is packed with key elements from the movie franchise, it looks great and there’s the chance of taking home some seriously big wins. On the whole therefore, anyone with even a slight interest in the movie itself really has to give the Austin Powers slot a try.
Meanwhile, the slot based on the film credited with jump-starting the career of Sharon Stone is made by the folks at iSoftBet. It’s a classic five-reel slot with a generous 243 paylines, with spins available from as little as 50p and going as high as £50. And it’s worth pointing out at this stage that while the setting, visuals and sounds are indeed based on the iconic flick from the 90s, it’s not even nearly as X-Rated as the movie itself…just in case you wondered!
Symbols include a police badge, handcuffs, a sports car and the usual playing card symbols. The ice pick made infamous in the movie is worth the most, with a 1,500 coin payout up for grabs if you manage to land five in a row.
As for bonus features, there are three to play for in Basic Instinct and they all bring something exciting and interesting to the table. These occur when landing the Wild Drop appears on the first, third or fifth reels fully stacked – the same symbol also triggering the Free Spins Wild feature when hit in the appropriate formation. If you’re lucky, you could be in for a whole bunch of wilds and up to 38 free spins.
Then there’s the Bonus Wild, which only appears on the third reel but can also turn up fully stacked. When this happens, you get to take part in a pick-me round with a dozen boxes, each of which hides a mystery item that could be a hefty cash prize. There’s also a progressive jackpot that can be scoped up during this round for good measure.
While the movie itself is high-energy and action-packed, the Basic Instinct slot comes across as a little on the slow side. The bonus rounds are decent enough, but probably not to such an extent that you’ll be coming back for more, time and time again. Still, if you’re a fan of the movie and simply looking to kill a little time…no pun intended…it’s definitely worth a look.
